Not only is Angelina Jolie one of the highest paid Hollywood actresses, she is also deeply devoted to humanitarian work and cancer prevention.

　　In addition to her stunning good looks, meteoric rise as a Hollywood star, and high-profile relationships, Angelina Jolie is also known for her humanitarian work. She credits her experience while filming Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in Cambodia for sparking her interest in helping people in need around the world. Afterwards, Jolie became involved with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and traveled on missions to the African countries of Sierra Leone and Tanzania. In addition to volunteering her time to the international aid organization, the actress opened her wallet, donating US$1 million while in Pakistan and meeting with Afghan refugees. It was the largest donation the UNHCR had ever received from a private individual. Her work with the organization continues, as she has visited with refugees from over 30 countries during her time as a goodwill ambassador.

　　Another more personal cause that the celebrity has become associated with is cancer prevention. Jolie, whose mother had breast cancer and died at the age of 56 in 2007 from ovarian cancer, decided to have both her breasts removed in February of 2013. Although the movie star did not actually have the disease, she learned she had an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer because of a defective gene. Because of this, Jolie had a double mastectomy as a preventative measure, thereby lowering her risk to just five percent. At first, she kept the procedure private, but later unveiled it in a New York Times op-ed, saying she wanted to help other women make good decisions about their health. Through her opinions on cancer prevention and her humanitarian efforts, Angelina Jolie has proven she is not just another pretty face.
