Sweet Memories
by Olivia Wycech
How one man and his daughter created happy memories from sad ones.
This isn't a story about grief, loss, and hurt. Instead, this is a story about love. It began in Cincinnati in 2009 when Ben Nunery married the love of his life, Ali. They bought a house together and, before moving in, Ali's sister took their wedding photos within the bare walls of the house. The couple wanted their wedding photos to be taken in the house that was to be their future. A year later, Ali gave birth to a daughter, Olivia. A year after that, tragically, Ali passed away from a rare form of lung cancer.
Obviously, grief and hard times followed. Two years later, Nunery and his daughter were finally ready to move out of the house that they had shared with Ali. Nunery was worried about the memories his daughter would take with her from the house. Instead of dwelling on the past sadness, he found a way to make happy memories so that his daughter could remember both her mother and the house.
Nunery asked his sister-in-law to help him recreate the wedding photos with his three-year-old daughter in place of his wife. Nunery and his daughter posed in the same manner and in the same places throughout the empty house after all their things were moved. The beautiful new picture set represented the time they spent in the house, the good times as well as the painful times. Even with all that had happened, Nunery still felt he was the luckiest man in the world. Death does not mean that we need to forget our loved ones, but instead find ways to keep our memories of them alive.
