A Square for Celebration
by William Ryan
For many people, Times Square is the center of the world.
New Year's Eve is celebrated in every corner of the globe, but there is no place more popular or more famous for its New Year's Eve celebration than New York City's Times Square. At 11:59 PM on December 31, the eyes of the world are fixated on Times Square's sparkling crystal ball as it begins its slow _(1)_. Hundreds of millions of people around the world are at that moment united as they bid a fond farewell to the year that has just passed, and greet the New Year with their _(2)_ hopes and dreams.
Times Square is sometimes called the crossroads of the world, and _(3)_ good reason. The actual square is _(4)_ in the center of New York City, where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect with West 46th Street, just a few blocks south of Central Park. The whole Times Square district is several blocks long from 42nd Street to 47th Street. The district was named Times Square when the _(5)_ of The New York Times newspaper moved into the area in 1904. The site of the original Times building is actually where the New Year's Eve ball drop is now situated. The crossroads of the world is also a _(6)_ description of how culture, art, business, media, and every other part of society all seem to merge in this uniquely diverse neighborhood.
Surprisingly, Times Square's biggest claim to fame is that it is the world's most popular tourist destination. Over 300,000 tourists visit the district daily, which equates to 39 million people _(7)_. This total is far more than the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Great Wall of China. With more neon billboards than Las Vegas, more theaters than London's West End, and more eateries than Paris, maybe it is not that surprising.
