Art can make even a boring ride home from work great.
In many of the world's cities, the word subway brings to mind images of dark, dirty, or even dangerous underground stations. _(1)_ While there are many safer and cleaner metros, the idea of an art museum housed within a city subway system is something out of the ordinary.
_(2)_ In fact, this project of Art Stations began more than 10 years ago. The project of contemporary art spread out over 13 stations of Naples Metro. Directed by Achille Bonito Oliva, former director of the Venice Biennale Festival, it features some of the world's best known artists. While displaying fine art in city metro stations is certainly nothing new, many of the stations themselves have been transformed into artistic creations. _(3)_ The Naples Art Stations are stimulating, aesthetically complex environments that offer a striking, unexpected, and welcome change to the boring ride home.
The municipal government's twin goals are to beautify the urban transit system and to make contemporary art more accessible to public people. _(4)_ The innovative project's Toledo Station is dramatic enough to have been cited by The Daily Telegraph as one of the most impressive undergrounds. _(5)_
(A) The Italian city of Naples has been attracting global attention for its Art Stations since the first one appeared in 2013.
(B) The public and artistic response has been positive.
(C) Over 180 creations by more than 100 artists and architects can be viewed in underground galleries that also stand alone as feats of architecture.
(D) New York City's metro has a well-deserved reputation as one of the city's most dangerous places after dark.
(E) This one-of-a-kind station is also quite naturally the subject of much discussion among designers, architects and artists around the world.
