Venice, Italy: A Fantastic Place of Culture, Cuisine, and Color

by Brian Foden

For tourists, Venice and Burano have a lot of wonderful sights and tastes to offer.

There are many wonderful sights to see in Venice, but quite literally one of the most colorful places is Burano, situated on the northern end of the famed Venetian lagoon. Actually a tiny archipelago of four islands linked together by bridges seven kilometers from Venice, Burano attracts visitors in large part due to the bright, multicolored buildings there. Although the houses may appear to be painted in a rainbow of random hues, the colors chosen are in fact strictly controlled. Those wanting to paint a house first need to submit a request to the government, which informs the applicants which colors they can use depending on the particular spot where they are located. The current population of Burano is less than 3,000, but because of its small size, it has a fairly high population density.

In addition to the small, colorful homes, there are a few other attractions in Burano. One is the Church of San Martino, whose distinctive leaning bell tower greets visitors arriving by boat. Another is the Museum and School of Lacemaking, which dates back to 1872 and hints at how important the craft has been to Burano. Lacemaking began on the island in the 16th century and boomed, although trade faltered in the 18th century. Today, there are still artisan lace makers and many stores selling lace, although it is no longer made in the traditional time-consuming way. Visitors to Burano can also enjoy souvenir shops and restaurants along Via Galuppi, its main street that is named after Baldassare Galuppi, a successful composer who was born in Burano in the early 1700s.
