White Collars Turn Blue|

Only a few years ago, people in smaller cities flocked to the big cities in Taiwan with bright eyes and big dreams about getting a good job in an office. For many, to wear a shirt with a white collar was a sign that they had made it in the world. They left behind their families, who were farmers, mechanics, and laborers in general. Recently, though, something interesting has happened. The people that strove so hard to make it as white-collar workers now want to go back and become blue-collar workers. They have ditched their big city dreams and are taking what they learned back to their hometowns.

There are many reasons for this, but one of the main ones is that it is difficult to find high-paying white-collar jobs after college. Most companies only want to pay employees well if they have a lot of experience, which new graduates don't have. Therefore, they are forced to work at low wages for demanding bosses and eventually get fed up with working in an office. After a few years of this, taking one's skills and going back home doesn't seem so bad. The cost of living in smaller cities is much lower, and people can start their own businesses or take over ones from family members. There have even been reported cases of people with PhDs going back to their hometowns and selling chickens at the night markets. While they aren't using their degrees, they are much happier being their own boss.
