What Are the World's Happiest Nations?

Those looking for greater happiness and satisfaction in life should head to northern Europe but steer clear of Egypt and countries worst hit by the Eurozone crisis, according to the 2013 World Happiness Report released recently by Columbia University's Earth Institute. Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden are the world's happiest countries, according to the survey of 156 countries. Rwanda, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Benin, and Togo, which are all nations in sub-Saharan Africa, are the least satisfied with their lives.

The United States came in at number 17 in the world in terms of overall happiness, but it still lags behind Canada at six, Australia at 10, Israel at 11, the United Arab Emirates at 14, and Mexico at 16.

Hayao Miyazaki Announces Retirement Again

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most admired and successful directors. He said recently that at the age of 72, he wanted to do other things besides slaving away over his drawings to meet feature film deadlines. "I know I've said I would retire many times in the past. Many of you must think, 'Once again,' but this time I am quite serious," he said. "This will never happen again," Miyazaki said at the conclusion of a nearly two-hour-long news conference in which he shared his thoughts on everything from war to Italian cuisine, one of his favorites.

The co-founder of Studio Ghibli, who won an Oscar in 2003 for his masterful and disturbing critique of modern industrialism in Spirited Away, said he hopes to work for another decade, but at a slower pace that might allow him to perhaps even take Saturdays off.
