When Fear Takes Over
by Daniel Howard
Fear is a natural part of life that can protect us, but when it gets out of hand, it can be a serious problem.
There are many scary things out there. Some are dangerous and may hurt people, but fear helps us _(1)_ this and survive. Poisonous snakes, vicious dogs, and strangers in dark alleys are all potential _(2)_. For people with phobias, however, sometimes fear takes on a whole new meaning.
A phobia is a condition in which someone suffers from an intense fear of an object, animal, or situation. With phobias, the fear is almost always more intense than the actual danger presented. For example, someone with acrophobia, which is a fear of heights, will be afraid of any high place, regardless of the safety measures taken. To be diagnosed _(3)_ a phobia, a person needs to be suffering from such an intense fear that it interferes with his or her life. Examples of this include _(4)_ certain situations because of a frightening object or the chance of that object appearing. Someone with arachnophobia(蜘蛛恐惧症) might not go hiking for fear of running into a spider. Some people will have panic attacks just thinking about their fears.
For people with severe phobias, the only _(5)_ option is to see a psychologist or therapist. There are various coping methods and cures that help with phobias, but every person's case is _(6)_. Most treatments for phobias include desensitization. By _(7)_ exposing a patient to the fear slowly and in safe conditions, a therapist can retrain the patient's brain. This is often extremely unpleasant, but it also helps them overcome their fears and live normal lives, so it is definitely worthwhile.
