Six People Infected with HIV Per Day
Parents and teachers should spend a good amount of time teaching children and students about the dangers of contracting HIV. While these conversations are not easy, they are important because HIV is life changing. Making sure that teenagers know how important safe sex is should be a priority for anyone dealing with them. This is especially true since it was reported recently that in Taiwan nearly six people per day are infected with HIV.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (庄人祥) said that 1,360 people were reported to have been infected with HIV from this January through July, which is an increase of nearly eight percent compared to the same period last year. "On average, there were six people infected with HIV daily this year, which suggests that the number of people being infected with HIV has increased fast," Chuang said. "Among all the 1,360 people who are confirmed to be infected with HIV, 1,206 people contracted it through unprotected sex. The statistics show that if condoms or lubricants are not properly used, the risk of being infected with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases will increase. There are more and more young people contracting HIV every year, and this suggests that more young people are at risk of becoming HIV positive."
In order to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, new sex education and AIDS-prevention classes will be launched in Taiwan. Also, anonymous AIDS testing will be set up on college campuses around the island to help students know if they are infected
