Is Generation Me really self-absorbed and egotistical?

　　If you have trouble keeping track of all the nicknames that have been coined for the various generations, it's understandable. You may have heard of Baby Boomers, _(1)_ are people born between 1946 and 1964, give or take a few years. Then, there is Generation X, which consists _(2)_ those born from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. More recently, Generation Me is the title that has been given to people born between the early 1980s up to the year 2000.

　　Generation Me individuals are said to be self-absorbed, narcissistic, and highly _(3)_ in themselves. One of their hallmark traits is a _(4)_ of tradition, which is reflected in the clothing they wear and their liberal attitudes. They tend to _(5)_ on the present and future rather than on what had been the norm in the past. Another characteristic of this group is that they don't like hard work, yet at the same time, they feel they are entitled to excellent jobs with fantastic pay. What's more, Generation Me has a strong sense of individualism. This means that they want to stand out from the crowd and not be thought of as merely _(6)_. With this strong ego, it's not surprising that these people aren't afraid to speak their minds.

　　Much of this _(7)_ of Generation Me has been reiterated in a recent TIME magazine article entitled The ME ME ME Generation. However, many who have read the article believe it's just another case of the older generation slamming the younger one.

『我』世代真的既自私又自大吗？

　　如果记下各个为不同世代所冠上的封号对你来说颇为困难，那是可以理解的。你也许听过婴儿潮世代，这些人出生于 1946 年至 1964 年左右。接着就是由 1960 年代初期至 1980 年初期出生的人所组成的 X 世代。更近期而言，在 1980 年代早期到 2000 年之间出生的人则被称为『我』世代。

　　『我』世代的人据说相当自私、自恋又对自己相当有自信。他们的其中一项代表性特质就是反传统，这项特质反映在他们的衣着及随心所欲的态度上。他们往往着眼于当下和未来，而不是固守过去的规范。这群人的另外一项特性就是他们不喜欢努力工作，但同时却又认为自己有资格获得高薪的好工作。此外，『我』世代的自我意识相当强烈。这意味着他们想要从人群中脱颖而出，而不想只是被视为平凡人。由于自尊心很强，这些人多半心直口快就不令人意外了。

　　关于『我』世代的许多叙述也在近期《时代杂志》中一篇名为 The Me Me Me Generation 的文章中被再次探讨。然而，许多看过这篇文章的人认为，这只不过又是另一个老一代抨击年轻一代的例子罢了。
