Crews Finish Installing World Trade Center Spire

　　Construction workers put the last pieces of a 408-foot spire into place on top of One World Trade Center recently, symbolizing New York City's comeback after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The spire brings the iconic building to a height of 1,776 feet, which is an allusion to the year the United States declared its independence. It also makes the building the tallest in the Western hemisphere and the third-tallest in the world.

　　Port Authority Chairman David Samson called the building a national symbol of hope and strength in the face of tragedy. While the building still has significant construction before its scheduled 2014 opening, the installation brought cheers from New Yorkers and from people around the country.

　　建筑工人近日于世贸中心一号大楼的顶端，把最后几片物件安置在这座四百零八英尺高的尖塔上，象征了纽约市于 2001 年九月十一日遭受恐怖攻击之后的卷土重来。这座尖塔让这座指标性建筑物的高度达到了一千七百七十六英尺，这个数字暗示了美国宣布独立的那一年。它也让该建筑物成为西半球最高和世界第三高的大楼。

　　港务局局长大卫․萨姆森把该建筑物称为是『即使面临悲剧也能产生希望和力量的一种国家象征。』虽然该建筑物在预定开幕的 2014 年之前仍有重大工程要实施，但这项安置仪式使得纽约人以及来自全美各地的人们都感到欢欣鼓舞。

 

NSPO Extends Life of Research Satellite

　　The ROC National Space Organization announced May 16 it has recently developed a unique procedure to extend the life of batteries powering satellite FORMOSAT-3, the first microsatellite designed to observe the Earth's atmosphere through a global positioning system. The system has been called the most accurate Earth thermometer in space.

　　This satellite network is capable of taking temperature measurements over oceans, high mountains, deserts, and Arctic areas that are inaccessible to land-based measurements. The data collected can be used to give much more accurate forecasts of temperatures in the middle and upper reaches of the atmosphere and will also prove useful to research on climate change and global warming.

国家太空中心延长了探测卫星的寿命

　　中华民国国家太空中心于五月十六日宣布，该组织最近已开发出一种独特的程序用来延长提供福尔摩沙卫星三号（简称：福卫三号）动力的电池寿命，而这颗卫星也是第一颗被设计成透过全球定位系统来观测地球大气层的微卫星。该系统已被称作太空中最精确的地球温度计。

　　这项卫星网络系统能够进行海洋、高山、沙漠的温度测量，还有用陆地架设之测量方法无法接近的北极地区。该卫星所采集的数据可用来提供中、高层大气层更准确的气温预报，而这些资料也被证实对气候变迁和全球暖化的研究非常有用。
