The Silence in Words(b)|

Murakami's life has been heavily influenced by Western culture ever since he was a small child. His novels are laced with references to Western music and literature, for which he is often the subject of scrutiny by Japanese critics. Even so, it is perhaps a result of this that has allowed him to develop an international cult-like following because it was after Norwegian Wood was published in 1987 that the writer went from being Japan's best kept secret to a New York Times best-selling author. If this book sounds at all familiar to you, it is because the title is a reference to a Beatles song, and in fact, most of his books are tributes to his Western influences. The author's next big breakthrough came in 1995 with The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, a book that fuses reality and fantasy and is the first of his works to contain the same surreal elements that have come to later define him.

In 2002, Kafka on the Shore was published and went on to win the Franz Kafka Prize, a prominent literary award, and garner the author even more acclaim. In October 2011, the highly anticipated 1Q84 was released to the English-speaking world and received such praise that Murakami was compared to Charles Dickens, and the book has been regarded as his magnum opus. All the while, between pumping out these page-turning literary feats, Murakami has also published various collections of short stories as well as works of non-fiction, which include recounts from the survivors of the sarin gas attacks which plagued Tokyo's subway system in 1995. Whether it is fact or fiction you are after, there are so many pages of Murakami to sift through that the author can stay quiet forever, as his words are best enjoyed line by line interpreted by your imagination.
