China Acknowledges Cancer Villages

　　China's environmental ministry appears to have acknowledged the existence of so-called cancer villages after years of public speculation about the impact of pollution in certain areas. For years, campaigners have said cancer rates in some villages near factories and polluted waterways have shot up.

　　Media coverage of the conditions in these so-called cancer villages has been widespread. In 2009, one Chinese journalist published a map identifying dozens of apparently affected villages. In 2007, the BBC visited the small hamlet of Shangba in southern China, where one scientist was studying the cause and effects of pollution on the village. He found high levels of poisonous heavy metals in the water and believed there was a direct connection between incidences of cancer and mining in the area.

　　经过数年来大众对于中国某些地区污染影响的揣测，中国环境保护部似乎已坦承所谓『癌症村』真有其事。从事抗议活动者数年来都曾提及，在某些邻近工厂及受污染水路的村庄内民众的罹癌率已迅速攀升。

　　有关这些所谓癌症村的媒体报导已经相当普及。2009 年，一名中国新闻记者发表了一张地图，指出数十座已明显受到波及的村庄。2007 年，BBC 走访了中国南部的一个小村庄上坝，曾有一名科学家于该村庄研究污染的原因及影响。他发现水中含有高浓度的有毒重金属，并认定癌症的发生和该区的采矿情形有直接的关系。

　　由公益人士制作的中国癌症村地图在网络上引起国际哗然，中国官方承认各地都有癌症村的存在，目前已确认数量为一百九十七个，以河南、江苏最多，且有逐渐西移趋势。专家估计加上非官方数据，癌症村恐多达四百五十九个，每年有一百四十万人病死，让中国网友自嘲自己真的是东亚病夫。

　　中国工厂任意污染地下水已达二十余年，2000 年开始，各地乡村因癌症大量死亡的新闻层出不穷。根据某项报导指出，每五个中国人，就有一人死于癌症，农民死于肝癌的比例为全球平均的四倍，胃癌则为全球平均的两倍。（数据源：自由时报）

Russian Meteor Blast Injures at Least 1,000

　　A meteor streaked through the skies above Russia's Urals region before exploding with a flash and boom that shattered glass in buildings and left about 1,000 people hurt. Described by NASA as a tiny asteroid, the meteors created a blast in central Russia equivalent to 300,000 tons of TNT, adding that the incident was a once-in-100-years event. Most of those hurt were in the Chelyabinsk region, though the vast majority of injuries were not serious. About 3,000 buildings were damaged, mostly with broken glass, as a result of the shock waves caused by the blast. Amateur video footage showed a bright white streak moving rapidly across the sky before exploding with an even brighter flash and a deafening bang.

流星袭击俄罗斯，爆炸死伤至少上千人

　　一枚流星快速掠过俄罗斯乌拉尔地区的上空，随之而来是伴随闪光及隆隆声的爆炸，震碎了建筑物的玻璃，造成约一千人受伤。根据美国太空总署描述，这个流星只是一颗迷你的小行星，当它在俄罗斯中部爆炸时的威力相当于三十万吨的黄色炸药，美国太空总署更补充说明这可是百年难得一见的事件。这些伤者大部份都住在车里雅宾斯克地区，但绝大多数伤者的伤势并不严重。由于爆炸所引起的冲击波造成了约三千栋的建筑物受损，其中大多数是玻璃破碎。路人所捕捉的影片画面显示一道明亮的白光快速划过天际，之后爆炸时甚至闪烁着更亮的光束，夹带震耳欲聋的爆炸声。

　　俄罗斯战略和技术分析中心主任普霍夫表示，目前还没有哪个国家可以真正解决小型天体威胁地球的问题。在可预见的未来，以某种方式实施拦截也是不可能的。他还说道，即使未来使用某些系统可以加以拦截，应该也不会广泛应用，因为费用非常昂贵。

　　俄罗斯联邦航天局战略规划管理部部长马卡洛夫说，陨石坠地速度很快，进入大气层的角度非常小，因此，使用现有手段对其进行追踪是不可能的。

　　美国密西根大学天文学教授伯金解释说，目前天文望远镜并没有覆盖全球。在天文望远镜覆盖的地区中，类似这样的天体以目前的望远镜很难观测得到，现行的望远镜主要是用来观测更大的天体，因为较大天体撞击地球所造成的破坏更大。（数据源：Taiwan News）
