by Leigh Goldberg
A bright and charismatic 15-year-old girl has become the voice for females in Pakistan.
Prior to October 2012, the name Malala Yousafzai was little known outside of Pakistan's Swat Valley. Now, the whole world knows of this teenage advocate for female education on _(1)_ of her being shot in the head and neck by a Taliban gunman as she was returning home on a school bus. Fortunately, she _(2)_ the assassination attempt and is well on the way to recovery and continuing her fight for female education.
To understand what _(3)_ Yousafzai, you have to understand what her world is like. In Pakistan, three _(4)_ four females cannot read or write. Yousafzai loved school and learning from an early age, so the Taliban's rules didn't sit well with her. At the age of 11, she gave a speech _(7)_ How Dare the Taliban Take Away My Basic Right to Education? to the national press in the provincial capital of Peshawar. Soon after, she volunteered to blog _(8)_ about going to school under Taliban rule for the BBC. She dove into it with passion and spoke openly about her plight to a national audience. Eventually, her identity was made public and Yousafzai became a _(9)_ advocate for girls' education. She encouraged parents to break with tradition and let their daughters go to school, campaigned to raise government spending on schools, and motivated girls everywhere to stand up for their right to an education.
